About the Exhibition:

To coincide with UBC Art & Culture District’s second annual ARTIVISM festival, the Hatch Art Gallery will be hosting a pop-up show of works from the AMS Permanent Collection. This year, the Hatch is placing a focus on activating the AMS Permanent Collection: a pedagogical tool that has seen many years of neglect, both materially and logistically. How To Unroll a Baxter&? will be one piece of a larger dialogue that will continue throughout the 2019/2020 exhibition season—one that takes a self-reflexive approach to interrogating what it means to have a collection that is both an integral artistic resource and a limited representation of “Canadian art.” 

How To Unroll a Baxter&? presents a way of working through a few key questions: What does it mean to engage a collection that has been prioritized for its monetary value rather than its pedagogical potential? How can a collection that is highly hegemonic be activated in a healing way?

Curated by Yasmine Whaley-Kalaora, How To Unroll a Baxter&? contains a fragmentary selection of works from the AMS Permanent Collection—queering viewing conditions to draw attention to works themselves and the varying states of care they are currently in.

This exhibition will provide a chance for the public to see works from the AMS Permanent Collection that are rarely exhibited, while providing the starting point for a larger and more transparent dialogue about the collection’s past, present, and future. 

Featuring work by: Iain Baxter&, Claude Breeze, Tom Burrows, Greg Curnoe, Jennifer Dickson, Joe Fafard, Yves Gaucher, Rodney Graham, Jack Markel, Al Neil, William Ronald, Marianne Schmidt, Takao Tanabe, and Harold Town.
